Borneo Programme Officer for TRAFFIC (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah)

Introduction to TRAFFIC

TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, works to ensure that trade in wild animals and plants is not a threat to the conservation of nature. It actively monitors and investigates wildlife trade and provides information to diverse audiences worldwide as a basis for effective conservation policies and programmes. TRAFFIC is a strategic alliance of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). TRAFFIC is an international network which is organised into seven regional hubs.

Borneo Programme Officer for TRAFFIC

1. Coordinate and implement TRAFFIC’s initiative in Borneo including smooth coordination with relevant partners in Borneo involving government agencies, conservation organisations and other parties;
2. Ensure timely delivery of project and programme-specific tasks and agreed-upon work plan, including in the preparation of related reports and / outputs;
3. Organise and participate in national and regional meetings; engagement with key government agencies in Borneo, including relevant forestry and wildlife authorities;
4. Monitor conservation policies and regulatory framework related to wildlife trade in Borneo, identify options and opportunities including the preparation of proposals, for promotion of improved standards in relation to wildlife trade;
5. Develop strategic, formal and informal alliances with key partners in governments, civil society, industries and businesses that shape and influence wildlife trade agenda in Borneo;
6. Support all communications and advocacy efforts to enhance visibility of TRAFFIC’s trade on wildlife trade, including engaging with the media partners in Borneo;

Requirements

1. A minimum of three years practical experience in wildlife conservation; work experience in Borneo will be an advantage.
2. University Degree in conservation or a relevant /equivalent field and / experience.
3. Ability to implement projects effectively and programme-specific tasks and agreed-upon work plan, including in the preparation and delivery of outputs in a timely manner.
4. Possesses good understanding of local, national and regional conservation processes, especially those concerning Borneo.
5. Possesses strong research and analytical skills, and an ability to articulate complex issues clearly.
6. Possesses good interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a diverse team as well as independently, with respect for and sensitivity to multi-cultural approaches.
7. Possesses strong communication skills with excellent fluency in spoken and written English and Bahasa Malaysia. Written and spoken fluency in Bahasa Indonesia will be an advantage.
8. Willingness to travel and work outside office environments, as required.
9. Applicants must be eligible to work in Sabah, Malaysia.
